FAQ: Why did my API key hit a budget?

API key budgets protect one app or tool from consuming the whole account balance.

Symptoms

  • Requests fail even though the account still has balance.
  • Usage Logs show the same API key repeatedly failing.
  • A local agent or chat tool stops after a burst of requests.

Fix

  1. Open API Keys.
  2. Find the key used by the app or tool.
  3. Check its budget and current usage.
  4. If the workload is expected, create a replacement key with the right budget.
  5. Keep a separate low-budget key for experiments.

Use separate keys for production, staging, local tools, and teammates. This makes budget issues easy to isolate.
